Black Diamond matcha is koi-cha or “thick tea,” a high grade matcha designed to be made in a formal style tea ceremony. The cup is thick, creamy, and sweet with little bitterness. Sold in 20 gram vacuum-packed tins.

Harvested May 2025 in Nishio, Aichi prefecture, Japan. It is made from the Yabukita cultivar.

Steeping Instructions

Matcha Preparation

Sift 4 grams of matcha into a bowl to remove any clumps. Add 1 oz of 195°F (91°C) water and whisk briskly in a zig-zag motion with a bamboo whisk (chasen).

The initial result will be a thick, creamy consistency. After consuming that, you can add more water to the bowl to whisk the remainder of the matcha which will be a thinner consistency.

I've been continuing to use all of the Tea Source Matcha varieties and this one still comes out on top as the most smooth and beautiful. It has a slightly sweet undertone that makes it a dream to sip straight, no additions. On a whim I added cream and ice cubes--it was over-the-top delicious. When divided up into many drinks the price is reasonable.

If you want to enjoy, like, really enjoy a proper matcha experience then please purchase this Koicha. It's so wonderfully smooth and sweet. When you happen to have "regular" or easy-to-find matcha you'll instantly notice the difference. Absolutely gorgeous! I must admit that I'm heavy-handed with the amount of Koicha I use. The price is worth it, so treat yourself.
