Suave and unsparing. Full-bodied with a noticeably satiny texture. The cup has a dark chocolate and charcoal character with no astringency.

Produced March 27-28, 2024 by Ms. Zhao Yu Jie in Feng Qing County, Yunnan Province. It’s a 1 bud 2 leaf pick from the Ruan Zhi cultivar growing at 6,200. Ruan Zhi is an oolong cultivar originally from Anxi County and shares its ancestry with Taiwan’s Qing Xin cultivar. This particular tea has similar qualities to Qimen (Keemun) black tea.

Steeping Instructions

Western Steeping Method

Steep 4 grams of tea in 10–12 oz of 212°F (100°C) water for 4 minutes.

Traditional Steeping Method

Steep 6 grams of tea in a 150 ml gaiwan or teapot with 212°F (100°C) water for the following times.

Rinse: 10 seconds – discard (optional)
1st steep: 25 seconds
2nd steep: 20 seconds
3rd steep: 40 seconds
4th steep: 2 minutes

Yunnan Soft Bone | Black Tea

Got this sent to me as a sampler. It's a really good tea with a soft mouth feel and an incredible umami taste. It's somewhat sweet and savory, but in my opinion not by tasting chocolate like or charcoal. To be honest I did not get that taste or vibe at all from this, but that may just be my taste buds. To me this has kind of the usual toasty smell you get from a fresh brewed black tea, but it kind of has that same characteristic that something like good savory broth has, like it gets your mouth watering a bit.
