A humble tea that cannot be ruffled. It’s a light cup with deep, earthy roots and an emphatic silky texture. The floral-sweet aftertaste surveys the landscape and brings everything into perspective. 

Produced March 13-15, 2023 by Mrs. Chun Feng in Lincang City, Yunnan Province. It’s a one bud, three leaf pick of the Yunnan Big Leaf cultivar growing at approximately 6,000 feet.

Is it my imagination, or is there a hint of cocoa in the flavor of this lovely tea? I'm not one who can pick up all the flavor nuances, but this one hit me with the first sip. A delightful morning cup!

Scarecrow Yunnan | Black Tea

Mellow and sweet for a Yunnan black tea-- nothing to write home about but solidly good. I've read that pu'er with a lot of mature leaves tends to actually be mellow and sweet compared to the "higher-grade" picks, so I wonder if it's because of this tea's 3-leaf pick. Speaking of the leaves, they're beautifully whole for something in this price range. Seems like it may have some aging potential too actually, as the 2023 batch I've got is holding up better now in 2025 than some teas from 2024 imo.

Scarecrow Yunnan | Black Tea

Great leaf-heavy, brisk Yunnan. Stronger and maltier (closer to an Assam) than picks with less leaves, but still very pleasant straight; very little bitterness/astringency. Worth an extra star for how well it's (apparently) aged since the last time TS acquired it in 2023. I wouldn't know this was more than a year old at all, and I am excessively picky about freshness/staleness.

Scarecrow Yunnan | Black Tea

Yunnan Dune Buggy got me interested in revisiting my old favorite, the Yunnan black tea. I had drifted away from this type (as I have been drinking tea my whole life and Tea Source for almost 20 years) just by virtue of getting into other kinds of tea at different points. At any rate, I had the pure joy of trying Scarecrow Yunnan today and I am sad I only bought two ounces. I will certainly be buying more on my next (very regular) order. It is one of the best Yunnan teas I have ever had, just like Yunnan Dune Buggy (although they are very different teas). Scarecrow is indeed a light cup, and it's perfect for the afternoon. As ever, the description of this tea is very good and it does indeed have a floral aftertaste which is simply wonderful. I am quite sadly struggling with caffeine at present (and my favorite teas are definitely black), and I think this mellow but delicious tea is a great compromise for me. I certainly don't feel jittery after drinking it. I hope my health issue with caffeine resolves soon, but until then I will be delighted to drink this and the lovely array of Tea Source's herbals and tisanes.
