For those who eat dessert first. Plum candy sweet in fragrance and cup. Light in body, juicy in mouthfeel, no astringency. This tea is easy to appreciate.

Harvested and produced April 10, 2025 by Ms. Huang in Lincang City, Yunnan Province.  It’s is a one bud, two leaf pick of the Zi Juan (Purple Beauty) cultivar growing at approximately 3,200 feet.

Since the late 1980’s, the Purple Beauty cultivar has been propagated by the Menghai Research Center and through further cultivation is now being more widely planted, but the tea is still scarcely available in the U.S.

Steep 4 grams of tea in 10–12 oz of 212°F (100°C) water for 4 minutes.

This makes an excellent cold brew tea. A pleasant fruitiness breaks across the tongue with each sip. Have stockpiled purple beauty by the pound. Just opening the bag and sniffing is wonderful.

A neat tea. Rich fruity smell unlike any camellia sinensis tea I've ever had before; the taste is maybe a bit more ordinary but reminds me more of a floral or fruity Fujian small leaf tea with a Yunnan varietal's punchiness. Good stuff.

Yunnan Purple Beauty | Black Tea

The first tea I've ever had made with this "Purple Beauty" cultivar; I can't speak to how it compares to others of the same "genre", but it's a good and distinctive black tea, especially for 12c/gram. Has the strongest fruit scent I've ever smelled off an unflavored tea-- on the level of how good high-end greens and jade oolongs can smell almost suspiciously floral. Taste isn't as amazing, but it's a "light" black tea where I can confidently say "light" isn't a euphemism for "weak"-- citrusy, tangy notes over a slightly sweet black tea base. Very light mouthfeel, but the aftertaste lingers. I get ~4oz per dry gram when brewing western style, a little less when brewing with a gaiwan. Has enough flavor to take sugar or a bit of milk, though the citrus notes don't really synergize well with milk. Makes a better sweet iced tea than most things not explicitly meant for such, too.

Got this as a sample with an order of jasmine Yin Hao. I actually enjoyed the “light” black tea flavor. It was fresh with no bitterness. I’d purchase it if it becomes more readily available in the US.

I stockpiled this tea as soon as I bought my first bag, knowing that -- like all agricultural products -- it's a limited run. It became my new desert-island tea. So, heartbroken that it's now out of stock. Please shoot up a flare if and when it's back.

This one is very smooth and sweet. I wasn't too sure my first cup, since it's a pretty mild black tea, but I have enjoyed it more and more each subsequent cup. I will happily buy more of this tea!
