Mr. Zheng's Lapsang Souchong | Black Tea
This is not a smoked tea. These 2018 hand-made, long, sinewy, black leaves produce an amazing aroma with deep, dark notes. The steeped cup is medium to full-bodied, very rich, and complex. It's reminiscent of black raspberries and fire-roasted dark chocolate. Incredible.
Up until recently, the trademark of Lapsang Souchong was its decisive and unapologetic smoky flavor from pine wood smoking. Since Chinese tastes tend to not favor smoky teas, Lapsang Souchong from the Wuyi area was almost exclusively for export to the west. The forests of Wuyi Shan became a UNESCO protected site in 1999, eliminating the pine wood source for smoking. Now the Lapsang Souchong from Wuyi is not smoked and brings an excellent new character of tea to explore.
