The aroma of lilacs – a light, buttery cup – soft, subtle, character. The pristinely clean cup lingers long and floral with an implied cinnamon presence that stays sweet instead of sharp.

This lot of Bao Zhong was produced from the JinXuan cultivar on 5/13/20 by Fu Xueneng. The Fu family has been making tea in the Datong Lake area of the Pinglin District for more than 100 years.

Bao Zhong is a famous Taiwanese oolong known for its long, twisted leaves and highly floral aroma. It undergoes very little oxidation to keep its green appearance and fresh character. The name Bao Zhong can be loosely translated as “paper-wrapped tea” and its origins date back to early nineteenth century China, where an Anxi tea farmer started wrapping this new tea into 200-gram paper squares, marking the tea name and logo on the outside. By the late nineteenth century the Bao Zhong style had migrated to Taiwan where two tea masters improved the technique and taught other farmers how to produce it. It’s sweet, light, and floral character is easy to like and remains one of the classics of Taiwanese tea.
