Tenacious and vibrant, like a plum blossom in winter, its charms are not hidden. A black tea made from an oolong cultivar, it has a deep, floral sweetness that holds you close. 

Mr. Du Yong Gang made this tea. He is both a graduate of the Yunnan Agricultural University (to study tea making) and a follower of Buddhism. Here he uses the Mei Zhan cultivar, which is a traditional oolong varietal from Fujian. Translated from the local Min Nan language, Mei Zhan (or Mui Qiam) describes one’s resilient spirit and inner beauty in the face of adversity, which is often depicted as a plum blossom on a snow-covered branch. Mei Zhan has been transplanted in many different tea-producing regions of China and thrived. Similarly, Mr. Du’s talents sent him to Feng Qing to manage a large, government-run tea factory there. Dissatisfied with making large-volume/low-quality tea, he quit his job to start out on his own. The combination of his academic skills and Buddhist sensibilities make for a rare form of deliberation in tea making. This will guide him through the winters that come his way.

Traditional Steeping 

6 grams | 6 oz water | 212°F | Rinse 5 sec. | Steep 30 sec.
