Dark Teas

The category of China dark tea is shrouded in mystery. They are almost never seen in the West. Dark teas from Hunan Province steep up medium-bodied, very smooth, and usually with a natural sweet note as opposed to the dark earthiness of puer. Technically, dark tea is a tea that has gone through a secondary fermentation process. Like puer, dark teas age well and are probiotic.

Traditionally, all dark teas are rinsed with hot water, then are made with boiling water and steeped a short time (1-5 minutes), but they can be steeped much longer for a much stronger brew. Click here for more information...

2007 Guangxi Dark Tea Cake

This dark tea cake from the Baise district of Guangxi province is very similar to an aged sheng puer. The liquor is very fresh, vibrant, crisp, invigorating, and smooth with a hint of a toasty note. The leaves (local Guangxi tea cultivar Lingyun White Downy tea) for this tea were grown in 2005, then aged and made into this cake in 2007. An exceptional and very unusual dark tea.

This very rare compressed dark tea comes in a small hand-made bamboo basket, that holds about 1/2 lb. As with most aged dark teas the liquor very complex, light to medium-bodied, slightly sweet, toasty, very smooth, with a velvety texture. A wonderful and unique China tea from Anhui province.

This dark tea from Hunan province of China, is medium to full-bodied, very smooth, with a delicious dusty rose flavor and aroma. Contains dark tea and rose petals. Comes in approximately 5 gram pressed tea pieces. Use one in a mug and steep a short time (one minute), or use one in a larger pot (12-20 oz.) and steep a longer time (2-3 min.).

This loosely-packed dark tea brick from Anhua County (famous for Dark Tea production) steeps up a light golden color, with a hint of red. The liquor is sweet, mild, smooth, with a hint of new mown hay. This is an extremely pleasant all-day drinking tea. It is also a probiotic tea.
